Pohorje

A pre-Alpine mountain range inviting you with its beautiful pristine nature and a wide range of sports activities throughout all seasons. Hidden within mostly coniferous forests are over 90 species of birds and as many as 700 species of butterflies, while along the well-maintained trails, you can enjoy views of the mysterious Pohorje lakes.

About Pohorje

Pohorje is one of the best-preserved natural areas in Slovenia. It is a pre-Alpine mountain range located in northeastern Slovenia, mostly covered with coniferous forests. It stretches between the Drava River to the north and the Drava Plain to the south, reaching Dravograd and Slovenj Gradec to the west, and Maribor to the east.

Natural Attractions

Pohorje captivates with its coniferous forests, the primeval Šumik forest, waterfalls, and wetlands with lakes such as Črno jezero, Lovrenška jezera, and Ribniško jezero. It is home to numerous animal species, including deer, chamois, and other mountain wildlife, as well as 90 bird species and over 700 butterfly species. The highest peak of Pohorje is Črni vrh, standing at 1,543 meters.

Cultural Attractions

A rich history, well-preserved traditional cultural landscape, abundant cultural heritage, and vibrant cultural traditions are closely linked to the revival of diverse intangible heritage stemming from Pohorje’s traditional economic activities (such as woodworking, sawmilling, ironworking, glassmaking, blacksmithing, and wooden raft construction).
The extensive tangible cultural heritage is especially reflected in architectural monuments—including castles and their ruins, manor houses, villas, farmsteads, smithies, sawmills, mills, and memorial landmarks—as well as in sacred heritage, represented by numerous churches, chapels, and religious monuments.

Pohorje Cuisine

Pohorje cuisine is based on recipes passed down from grandmothers, complemented by the flavors of quality meat and vegetables, forest delicacies, and meadow herbs. It is hearty and derives its character from aromatic tastes. Typical dishes include Pohorski pisker (a traditional stew), aromatic Pohorska bunka made with local cheeses, a simple Pohorje omelet, and Pohorski žganci served with local milk or coffee with milk.
