Uršlja gora

The easternmost peak of the Karavanke connects the Mežica and Mislinja Valleys and welcomes the wider surroundings with the highest-altitude church in Slovenia. It has inspired countless artists and offers a variety of hiking trails of different difficulty levels, all leading up to the mountain lodge where you can enjoy delicious Koroška dishes.

Church of St. Ursula – Spiritual and Cultural Symbol

At the summit of Uršlja gora stands the majestic Church of St. Ursula, built at the highest elevation among churches in Slovenia. Its construction began in 1570 and was completed around 1602. Over the centuries, the church has become an important pilgrimage site, a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the connection between people and the mountain.

Experiences Along the Way

The path to Uršlja gora is not just a climb – it’s a journey through history and nature.

On the way to the summit, you can admire:

– The Brančun Sarcophagus, an ancient funerary monument,
– Apohal Chapel, a silent witness of old pilgrimage routes,
– A spring of pure mountain water, where you can refresh yourself,
– The stone footprint of St. Ursula, around which legend tells of the saint leaving her mark here.

Breathtaking Views

At the summit, a 360-degree panorama unfolds: to the west stretches the Mežiška Valley, to the south the Mislinjska Valley, to the northeast the Šaleška Valley, and to the north, the view reaches into Austria and, on clear days, even as far as Triglav and Hungary.

Mountain Hut below Uršlja Gora

Just below the summit, hikers are welcomed at the Mountain Hut below Uršlja Gora, where you can rest and enjoy excellent Koroška dishes and hearty soups such as jota, ričet, pasulj, bograč, goulash, and mushroom soup, as well as žganci, sour milk, Carniolan sausages, eggs for breakfast, and for dessert homemade štruklji and strudel (apple and blueberry).
The hut is an excellent choice for hikers, private groups, celebrations, or relaxed visits, and also hosts weddings. It offers beautiful views, rich tradition, and hospitality that attract lovers of nature and cuisine.
